About us

A word from

our president

“As a former British & Irish Lion, I’ve been thrilled to organise the Classic Lions over the last three decades with matches played in Bermuda and across the UK.

Classics Lions is a perfect way for players who still have a high level of fitness, skill and ability to face former adversaries and in doing so bring pleasure to rugby supporters and raise money for good causes and charities.

We are proud to have the biggest names in history represent us and our matches are an extraordinary opportunity to watch and meet some of the icons of Lions rugby.

Classic Lions only feature ‘the best of the best’ and watching them play is an incredible experience not to be missed…”

President of Classic Lions

our story

Classic Lions was formed in 1997 by ex British & Irish Lion and Welsh International Allan Martin. Having retired from the game he and a lot of his former team mates and opponents felt they weren’t quite finished playing rugby and still had more to gain from the game as well as give back to it.

The World Rugby Classic series in Bermuda created the perfect platform the Classic Lions to excel with former international legends from the ‘Home Nations’ playing in the tournament for over 3 decades.

In addition to this the team have been involved in a number of exhibition matches and testimonial events throughout their history to further their development and the platform for legends to live on.

In 2019 Classic Lions became part of the Classic Sports Group with a hugely aspirational vision of growing the Classic Lions on a global basis and become a household name for any avid rugby fan. This exciting opportunity began with the home of the Lions being announced as being The Gnoll, Neath which has almost 150 years of rugby history through Neath RFC who where a huge rugby force in the 80s and 90s.

Like the Classic Lions, Neath RFC have huge aspirations for the future and the two entities aim to meet their goals and development in the coming years.
